Historic Graffiti at Montacute House

Thursday 15th February 2024

Speaker – Mary Chisholm

The fabric of Montacute House contains graffiti dating from the 17th-20th centuries, which, when studied together, reveals an intriguing social history of the building and its former inhabitants. During the course of her work to locate, document and research these marks, architectural historian, Mary Chisholm, has been able to uncover more about the people that lived, visited, and worked at Montacute House. This talk presents her findings in their social context, and brings to life a unique way of looking at the history of the house from those who left their mark.
